20 Years and still going strong

On the 22nd of January 1991 Fibre Technologies started life in its founder’s garage, selling test equipment for SDH and low speed converters. Now, on the 22nd of January 2011, Fibre Technologies Limited “FTL” is still supplying low speed converters for legacy installations all the way to 10 Gig DWDM systems; a multimillion pound company supplying leading edge solutions to the private and public sector; companies, local government and the two largest Telecoms operators in the UK. FTL have continued year on year with measurable growth.

So what do the next 20 years look like? We have gone from low speed nx64kbps to 40 Gigabits today. 100 Gigabits has moved “out of the lab” and is being installed already. Will science and technology bring us Tachyons (FTL) faster than light? Who knows?

The next 12 months will see FTL launching our Access Control Division “FTL Secure Solutions” www.ftlsecuresolutions.co.uk bringing you access and building control systems, with a NACOS Gold installation team, 24x7x365 monitoring and 4 hour on-site response.

This year you will also find us re-launching “Fibre Distribution” www.fibredistribution.co.uk. The fibre optic market has matured significantly over the last 10 years and it is not the black art it used to be. Fibre Distribution has been set up to deliver what you want now, with stock and online ordering.

This year Fibre Technologies will be sponsoring a Mount Everestclimb with our good friend James Ketchell. You may remember earlier this yearJames rowed the Atlantic solo and raised ?9,000 for the NSPCC, taking 110days.

Next year “April 2011” James is attempting to climb to thesummit of the world’s tallest mountain, following in the footsteps of SirEdmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay, who became the first people to summit MountEverest on May 29th 1953.

Irrespective of the type, OTT content puts significant stress onthe network

because it must traverse internet peering connections, corenetwork infrastructure,

Middle Mile connections, and finally the access network to bedelivered.

An individual subscriber?s request for video content, where auser is highly

utilizing their connection for a long period of time, has acompound effect on

the network as subscribers? linear-based requests areaggregated, causing

network congestion and sub-optimal quality of experience (QoE).

The traditional approach to address bandwidth growth, reducecongestion,

and ensure customer satisfaction is via incremental networkoverlays and

increased Internet transit capacity. This is effective toaddress bandwidth

requirements, but it?s not efficient from an economic standpointas overlays

drive additional CAPEX and OPEX. Considering that the averagerevenue per

user (ARPU) will stay static (if not diminish with increasedcompetition), this

continued investment fuels a divergence of cost and revenue,leading to less

profitable service offerings.

Secondly, as a subscriber?s internet connection usage grows morebandwidthintensive

with OTT and other sources of video, the experience willdeteriorate.

This is based on time to download and view content as well assystem response

times for control commands (play, pause, etc.). As expectationscontinue to

become more difficult to meet, more service complaints will belogged and

subscriber churn will increase as they move to competitiveservice offerings.

An alternative content delivery approach, that is beneficial toboth service

provider and customer, is needed. This approach will need todeliver content

effectively and efficiently, provide a high QoE for theend-customer, and limit

the service providers? requirements to augment the network.

EchoVaultThroughput Meter (centralized RFC 2544 Testsuite)
We discussed about the Ethernet Services birth certificate in the December 2009EchoNEWS issue. The most questioned character of a new circuit is itsthroughput. Customers are always interested to know that they are receiving theamount of bandwidth per quality class they have purchased. The Throughput Meterintroduces centralized and automated circuit turn-up verification andtroubleshooting via IETF RFC 2544, the industry de-facto standard forthroughput measurements.

The EchoVault Throughput Meter enables automated testing & reporting of Ethernet and IP OAM (Operations Administration and Maintenance) parameters (on the service VLAN), such as Frame Delay, Frame Delay Variation, Frame Loss, Frame Loss Rate (FLR), Throughput and Availability.

Ensuring the Ethernet service quality, performance and SLA adherence right after the installation strengthens the customer relationship. Customer knows that the service implementation and hand-off is done professionally.

The Throughput Meter comes with aeasy to use wizard like user interface that guides the user in the measurementand report creation process. First, user associates the measurement to thedesired customer, selects the time for the test, source and target destinationsand finally chooses one of the pre-configured RFC 2544 Test Suiteconfigurations. The Throughput Meter report is provided either in PDF or RTFformat and delivery methods include email, SCP* and EchoVault Portal.
Throughput Meter reports are saved for future reference toEchoVault Report Catalog that can be also viewed in read only mode throughEchoVault Portal. For the Service Provider the Throughput Meter provides easyre-run of the tests with ‘Play Again’ button.
